I didn’t think I knew who Ashe was when I first heard that Niall was collaborating with her, but as soon as I heard the beginning of the original “Moral Of The Story”, I realized I had heard it in To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You. Ashe has a really cool voice, and the way Niall’s voice fits so effortlessly with hers made the song even more enjoyable.

I didn’t know much about the song apart from it being in the movie soundtrack, so I did a bit of research on it while having it on repeat of course. Ashe wrote the song during a time where she was filing for divorce (around Valentines Day), and it’s an extremely personal track co-written by FINNEAS. Speaking about the song prior to its release, Ashe said “Months later than I should have, I moved out of my house, filed for divorce, and left for tour. Faced with a broken relationship and no immediate answers as to why we failed, writing ‘Moral of the Story’ became my way of making sense of it all”.

The rewritten lyrics by Niall allude to a song called “Paper Houses” from his debut album, which fans caught on to rather quickly. “It’s not funny how it changes/ We ended up like strangers/ We burnt down our paper house”, Niall sings with a smooth tone. He also changes the lyric “Talking with my mother/ She said ‘Where’d you find this guy?’” to “Talking with your father/ He said that you could be mine”. It’s interesting to see how the slight changes differ from the original and make it an entirely different song. Ashe and Niall have shown a lot of respect for each other since the collaboration was announced. Taking to Twitter, Niall tweeted “Thank you @ashemusic for allowing me to sing your beautiful song ‘Moral of the Story’ with you . It’s out this Wednesday and I hope you all enjoy it x”, Ashe replied and told Niall it felt as though he was “there from the start” writing and recording with her.

The song is powerful and emotional, and the new lyrics add an interesting twist to the already honest and raw song. Check out the reworked version featuring Niall below and let me know your thoughts!
