Lily Soleil Talks About The Importance Of Being “Honest” On Her Most Recent Single
Samantha Colleran, April 2022
Following the success of her Olivia Rodrigo inspired “Cryin’” back in September, Lily Soleil shares a more emotional side of her songwriting on her most recent release titled “Honest”. While “Cryin’” has a rockier sound, “Honest” is a hard hitting piano driven ballad that allows Lily’s vocals to shine through and truly capture her heartbreak. Recorded in a month and only containing three tracks on the recording (Lily’s vocals, guitar feedback, and the piano), “Honest” is an incredibly raw and vulnerable moment in Lily’s discography that will have listeners craving more.
What started as a song idea about two years ago eventually evolved into the song Lily shared with her listeners in late February. Drawing on personal experiences, the song represents multiple situations in Lily’s life where people weren’t direct with her, ultimately leaving her heartbroken. Honesty is something we as humans crave from one another, even if we think it’ll hurt us, and this song perfectly describes the feeling of wanting someone to be genuine in their feelings towards you.
From the moment the first piano chord fills your ears, you’re immediately swept up into the dark, angsty feeling of the song. When Lily begins to sing, every word hits you right in the gut, as if you’re experiencing her pain. The lyrics are blunt and get straight to the point, “If you were honest with me/ I could have avoided all my pain and all my grieving/ You’re putting on a show of trickery and lies/ But I pulled the curtain back/ So take off your disguise”. A bit harsh upon first listen? Maybe. However, the song is meant to encourage people to be honest and upfront about their emotions, and these incredibly vulnerable lyrics help us gain an understanding of Lily’s honest emotions toward those who hurt her in the past. It’s a strong point for Lily as an artist, and I hope to hear more powerful moments like “Honest” as she releases new music and shares her vulnerable feelings with the world.
