Amelia Moore is a self defined “homeschool to Hollywood” Georgia bred singer with a clear focus in her music direction; emotional transparency. As a trained violin player and self taught piano player with vocal training with Eric Vetro, Amelia has been working for her success for a long time, and all the hard work she’s put into music is finally paying off. With features in Billboard, Paper, and Notion, just to name a few, as well as landing the gig as the opening act for Fletcher on her North American tour, Amelia Moore has solidified her place as an up and coming musician you won’t want to let slip under the radar. Earlier this month, Amelia sat down with º1824 to talk about her debut EP, teaching a robot to love, which documents her struggles to teach her ex partner how to love her.

Some of Amelia’s biggest influences in life are Pharrell Williams, Justin Timberlake (she notes that his 20/20 Experience album was the first one she ever heard in full, she was sheltered as a child and couldn’t consume a lot of what we consider mainstream music), Charli XCX, Lorde, Kanye West, and Julia Michaels. Museums help Amelia ground herself during times of writer’s block; she puts on a pair of headphones with no music and walks around looking at art and admiring the people around her in hopes she’ll find inspiration there.

Amelia has come into her own as a songwriter; she’s no longer afraid of writing in a room alone, she’s not looking to impress anyone but herself. Amelia describes songwriting as a form of therapy, especially teaching a robot how to love, since it was written amidst a breakup with a man who wasn’t good for her. Becoming more comfortable in her abilities to write songs allowed this EP’s development to occur naturally. The idea for the title came about during a one on one Cards Against Humanity game (Amelia noted that she’s aware this game isn’t a one on one game, but it led to something very cool, so maybe there’s a lesson in there somewhere about 1v1 Cards Against Humanity games). One of the cards said something about teaching a robot how to love, so she wrote it down in her notes app and the concept was revisited a week later during a writing session, which led to the EP’s intro song being written.

One of Amelia’s main goals with teaching a robot to love was to give people a new word to describe their toxic exes. Robots are oftentimes depicted as incapable of feeling emotions, particularly love, and Amelia wants people to learn from her experiences and let the ‘robots’ out of their lives. The creation of this EP marked the end of a hard point in Amelia’s life, but opened the door to a brand new beginning where Amelia has been able to express her emotions and share them on a large platform to help people struggling with the same experiences as her to feel less alone. The best way to listen to this album, from the woman herself, is to grab a snack, pull up the lyrics, and listen to the EP top to bottom (there’s a reason the tracks are in the specific order they’re in)!

As a younger artist with a lot of success, Amelia was asked by a number of conference participants to give her advice to young creatives in the industry looking to have success like her. Despite being so young, Amelia had a lot of wonderful advice to offer. First off, perfection isn’t real; everyone has their own idea of perfection, so don’t waste your time trying to fit the ever changing mold. Failing forward is better than remaining stagnant in your art, you should never be afraid to fail as it’ll continue to propel you forward. Remaining curious and asking questions is better than pretending to know everything. Being emotional and open in conversation with people allows you to form deeper connections, cry at work if you need to! Perhaps the most important piece of advice: if people don’t believe you, fuck them. You understand your goals and aspirations in life, don’t let anyone knock you down.
