Sunday Sounds: June 14, 2020, “Alfie’s Song (Not So Typical Love Song)”
In honor of the Hulu series Love, Victor, a spinoff series of the movie Love, Simon, coming out this week, I figured for today’s post I would throw it back to one of my favorite songs from Love, Simon. Jack Antonoff of the band Bleachers produced/sang/wrote a few of the songs featured on the soundtrack, but this one is one of my favorites!
“Alfie’s Song” is the first on the tracklist, but it’s actually used for the end credits of Love, Simon. The lyrics are typical Bleachers style; descriptive and metaphorical with a tinge of sadness (“You’d leave the cities and chase bullet holes/ That’s actually star light”) masked by happy sounding backing music. The lyrics are reflective of a young love, comparing the initial innocence of love to “children sing[ing] on the sidewalk”, showing that love can be difficult at times (“No not so typical love song/ Cause it hurt us again and again”), but ultimately realizing that things will turn out okay (“I wanna be alright with my baby tonight”). It has a slightly 80s feel to it, with a feel good guitar driven musical background and a really awesome saxophone break right before the outro.
“Alfie’s Song” was co-written by Harry (Styles) and Ilsey Juber, who has written songs for people like Shawn Mendes and Miley Cyrus. It fits in perfectly with the theme of the movie, and it’s all around a great song that I wish had a moment in the actual movie, but I’m glad it earned a spot on the soundtrack. Check out the music video below and let me know your thoughts on the song in the comments!
Love this! That video made me smile.
