Uchechi’s EP “Gemini Sun” Puts A Unique Spin On Alternative Music
Samantha Colleran, August 2020
Uchechi is a Canadian based, Nigerian born singer, and her most recent release is a six track EP titled Gemini Sun. All of Uchechi’s earliest memories are linked to music, most notably artists such as Michael Jackson, The Everly Brothers, and Whitney Houston. She’s been writing songs ever since she was little, and even wrote a concept album at the young age of twelve but didn’t have the means to record it. That love for music has grown more serious as Uchechi grew older; in March 2018 she began working with online beats and writing songs to accompany those. Her inspirations and musical taste also expanded. She cites Marina Diamandis as the artist who led her down the alternative path in 2011 with her hit “Oh No!”. Uchechi also notes the incredible Lana Del Rey as an inspiration, which can be easily noted on the opening song to her EP called “Violet Storm” with layered vocals and a soft tone.
The six tracks on Gemini Sun are all unique in their own right, but the common factor tying them together is the beautiful vocal layers in each. Uchechi’s songs all tell a story and her lyrics are very poetic. In songs such as “Chérie” (“Unlike you/ The water’s cool to touch/ You’re blue mirage/ Filled with rage) and “A Sonnet In May” (“I stay whilst I sing/ And even though the times are tough/ A cold wind passes by/ And I know/ I’ll be just fine”) that point is proven. One of my personal favorite songs lyrically is the previously mentioned opening track on the EP, “Violet Storm”. The lyrics are absolutely gorgeous (“There’s a violet storm inside of me/ Flood waters deep/ Filled with glitter rain”) and the soft piano instrumental is accompanied by an actual recording of a thunderstorm. It’s a unique touch on an already gorgeous song.
Currently, Uchechi is working on a new EP which is set to be released next spring. She is also working on music videos for all six of the songs on Gemini Sun. You can listen to “Violet Storm” below, and make sure to stream Gemini Sun on Spotify or Apple Music, follow Uchechi on Instagram, and be on the lookout for future releases!
Thunderstorm in the background is an interesting touch.
